Ok, let me just start by saying that I do not subscibe to any particular belief and although I am considerably anti-religous, I hold nothing against any peoples based solely on their religious preference. I do, however, judge people by what they say and think. If a person has a valid arguement then I feel they should have the resources available to back up their arguement. Unfortunately, this disqualifies most religious people that try to support the claims that there exists an afterlife etc. These people tend to justify their beliefs through such evidence as spirtiuality, dogma, and the bible. I just can't accept something becuase I "feel it in my heart" (which is a muscle, by the way) or "because god talks to me." And the bible.... It astounds me that people still read this book, other than for the purpose of entertainment. This book is how many centuries old? Things that were written back then were undoubtedly different than they are now. Hell, we still don't stone people for commiting adultery do we? (we practically encourage it through, hollywood, mass media etc.) No, we hardly carry out any of the customs or traditions that were a part of society in biblical times. Let us examine for a moment a little time line and why people might have acted the way they did back then. First, there was absolutely no such thing as science to them. They had no means whatsoever of explaining any natural or unnnatural occurence. Everything that happened was simply "by god's will" mainly for lack of a better explanation. It seemed logical that there was this one centralized supernatural being that had power over eveything and governed all. Makes sense, right? There was no reason for them to believe otherwise, so why not. Well, as the centuries came and went so did the scientists, philosophers, etc. and many new ideas were thrown around and theories proposed. Although mounds of new evidence was being thrust in their faces the church refused to acknowledge any of it. People who spoke up against the church were either condemned or labeled as heretics. After all, it took the church how many centuries to publicly accept the fact that Galileo was correct in stating that the orange and a grape fell at exactly the same rate of speed regardless of size? Just a few too many, if you ask me. So why do people today still believe what people believed many centuries ago? Your guess is as good as mine. I suppose I must be missing something here to not be able to see the light or.... on the other hand, maybe I am the one who is right. The truth is we will probably never know the answers to the questions we have in this lifetime. That's a "hard mother-fuckin fact of life" (in the famous words of Marsalus Wallace) but the sooner you accept it the sooner you can get on with the rest of your life. Religion is easy answers for the people who are eager to hear them. I think it's merely a pillow for the weak at heart who can't face the fact that we REALLY don't know the answers. This is all my philosophy and the conclusions that I have come to at this point in my life and I am not supporting or condemning the following or prosecution of any religion. I am just saying that for us to reach any conclusion is this ultimate quest for answers we all need to have an open mind. These have been my words. Thank you.
